 Any stamp or coin collectors?

My older brother started collecting stamps but got bored, so I took his collection over. I collected stamps from all over the world. I still have my collection in a suitcase in the closet. I used to take it with me to work on in the car on trips. I have found some old stamps my mom had put aside, so I should put them with the collection, I guess, along with some first day covers I also found (envelopes with the stamps & sometimes special designs on the first day the stamp was issued). Of course, my collection was before the time of the self-adhesive stamps, which I use for my everyday mailing now. We had a friend who worked at the window at the p.o. & would buy special stamps for me long ago.

I also collected pennies in the collector books. My brother collected dimes & nickels. Mom gave me the old penny books long ago, so I still have those also.

I have also collected the newer state quarters in some booklets, but never did get the newer booklets. Mom had one of those really large books for all of the state quarters, but it was too hard to store & I prefer the smaller ones. I have enjoyed seeing the quarters representing each state.

I don't collect stamps, but my dad did.  [image]

When I was young, my parents got me a paperback type stamp collecting book--8 1/2 x 11. I have stamps in it that I collected. I also have some of my dad's stamp collecting things. I don't think, though, that I have all of his books. I wonder where they are.

As far as coins, I have a few coins I have saved that I think are special or seem to be worth saving. I do collect the state quarters--but not in any kind of 'unused' or 'mint' condition. I have these cardboard 8 1/2 x 11 boards I bought at Staples. I have two of them. One I use for the quarters that were minted in Denver. The other I use for the quarters that were minted in Philadelphia. If you look at the quarters, you will see either a D or a P on them. I also enjoy seeing the quarters as they come out. The Texas one just came out I think--as I saw it today for the first time.

I think I got into stamp collecting because some friends also did it, so we would trade extras around the neighborhood. I would always take the collection with me on trips & would put stamps in my albums (a large loose leaf one for worldwide & a smaller one for U.S.) while riding in the car. I liked thinks I could do like that while traveling, as we did take long trips.

I haven't seen the Texas quarter yet, Vicki. I also haven't been collecting the new quarters in mint condition, but have saved ones in circulation. I was going through some old papers & envelopes of things in my Mom's stuff & found old coins - old silver dollars, etc. I found several coins with paper notes wrapped around them as they were special ones for different reasons. I found a note with a couple of dollars in an envelope - this includes the first dollar my mother made while working. She had saved it for years. It has been kind of fun looking through these things. I need to divide them up & send some to DB to keep also, as they were in the bank box for safe keeping.

When I first saw the coin or stamp collecting I didn't pop in to read, not exactly my cup of tea. However, my DD loves collecting the new quarters and has a 'thing' for all dollar bills now that she has seen the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, lol.

You've reminded me, tho, of a tiny little frame that held a mercury dime nestled in blue velvet. It was the first 'real paycheck' my grandfather said he earned. I have no doubt of it, either. I'm wondering what happened to it, as my Aunt most certainly retained possession of it at some point, tho that doesn't mean she held onto it, darn it.

Thanks for the reminder. My father has a kid's hoarding attitude about pre-1964 silver half-dollars and dollars, too.

I noticed this on MT Breakroom.

My mother collects stamps and they will be mine before too long, I'm afraid. But I love them. She is "in" with her postmistress and whenever the new stamps comes out, they save her panes of them. She also gets first day covers, it's something she subscribes to. So she has a huge collection.

I kinda sorta collect coins. I'm collecting the state quarters. I also save any "interesting" coins I find. I have a few buffalo nickels. I received a pure silver quarter in change at Wal-Mart about 10 years ago. When I went to put it in my coin purse, I noticed it made a funny sound when it hit the other coins, so I fished it back out and looked at it and then looked up the info on it. I have several wheat pennies. So the coins I collect are more like that. Whenever I see a coin from my birth year, I save it. They are getting pretty rare, lol. I also save any coins older than than when I run across them.

My Dad had quite a collection of foreign currency. When he died my brother split it, one took the coins, the other the paper currency. And they gave me a huge back of wheat pennies that he had. They disappeared the next day so I don't know what happened there, although I have my suspicions.

So there you have my "pseudo collection" stories.

Hey, I found a wheat penny (1957) on the sidewalk yesterday. I prefer to collect Canadian Maple Leafs, though.

Glad you all stopped by to join in. It is interesting what all can be involved in collecting or just saving special stamps & money.

Me2 - you know what I mean on the "special" money, it sounds like from your post. I really enjoyed going through the little handwritten notes which were written so long ago. I did remember my mom saying she had kept her first dollar (there are 3 dollar bills in that envelope - her first dollar & 2 from a family friend - all very old).

Yes, Vicki, I saw a new nickel the other day - the first I had seen.

KC - wow, it sounds like you will inherit a large stamp & first day cover collection. I haven't added much to mine in a long time as it is too difficult to keep it up. I have some friends who are postal workers who would save me stamps if I asked them, but I don't know whether I want to get back into it or not. There again, it is so easy to just grab the new ones as they come out, then save them for someone in the future. I don't think any of my nieces or nephews collect, but you never know what they may be interested in later on. I loved the variety of stamps. Of course, now they have come out with so many more than they did when I was first starting collecting, so it is hard to keep up with it all.

I get excited also when I come across old coins in my change, but I don't check it very often. DH rolls change we set aside & he sometimes will notice really unusual coins, but he doesn't normally save them. I had collected the older pennys, but I haven't saved many of the more recent ones. I guess I had better see where I left off & start hunting for at least one for every year. See - this is inspiring me.

Billybob - I came across a few Canadian coins also while digging around in my Mom's coins. I usually haven't set them aside (the newer ones), but I probably should just to see how many I find (I don't see many).

I also found in an envelope 30+ dollar bills marked by my grandmother as "Barr dollars". Joseph Barr was secretary of the treasury for only a short period of time (couple of months or a year - can't remember). My grandmother looked for his signature & kept the dollars when she found them - thinking they would be a collector's item. So far, from my checking on eBay, they aren't worth much (are all $1), but you never know & I will continue to hold onto them.

Thanks all for joining in. Any discussion ideas are appreciated also. Please start some topics with me.

Yes, Billybob--you count--you've collected a coin. LOL

Anyway, do you collect Canadian money?

KC--I'm kind of with you--I have odd coins here and there that I found interesting.

By the way, I was thinking this morning--I bought from the post office those stamps that came out on a big cardboard piece--where they talked about things that were done/invented/etc., during different decades. I have all of them that came out. I thought maybe I'd put them in a notebook or something, but right now have them in a folder.

Collecting--It's not  [image] We love it!

Hello

My brother and I started collecting coins
in the mid 1960's. We'd go to the bank and
buy rolls of coins and look through them for
old coins. I found 2 whole rolls of buffalo
nickels, tons of wheat pennies, silver dimes,
steel pennies [WW2 period], WW2 era nickels,
silver quarters and half dollars. I still have them
all. I have some 1$ silver certificates, some old
$2 bills, silver dollars and a bunch of old foreign
coins. And some foreign coins from when we lived
in Germany when my dad was stationed there with
the Army and we traveled over Europe each summer
on vacation camping trips in the early - mid 1960's.

Have a great day all,

Jeff
